IDAS AD42-DS Filter Drawer Review
Просмотров 530День назад
In this video, I review the IDAS AD42-DS Filter Drawer. This filter drawer is unique in that it includes a 360-degree rotation function. The filter containing sliders lock into place nicely and the entire system prevents light leakage. Another thing I like about the AD42-DS is that it provides rotation capabilities on telescope systems that usually lack that ability, such as standard Newtonian ...

    Hi.. thanks for the valuable info. I was in the process of installing my focus motor adapter plate to the back of my SCT. Noticed the adapter plate does not sit flush to the back of the OTA and there is a gap. Correct me if I am wrong but your adapter plate looks flush to the OTA. Just wondering if the focus motor adapter plate is recessed like the stock focuser plate.

    I like the precision given for the backfocus lenght when you have some optical knowlegde background. The precision for focusig is so inacurate on this telescope it needs a reducer mechanism Celestron has made for astrophotography. None of the C8s will get this backfocus value. . The collimation by the secondary can change by 0.1mm the distance to primary. 0.1mm is tiny, but the secondary is multiplying the modification . Therfore the backfocus will change by 0.5 mm . The primary will have to move and therefore the backfocus at the back of the telescope will change . Oslo free version , is very uselfull to simulate where the focal plan is. What is important is to start from this reference given for Celestron but it is not so critical. because what will change is the focal lengt of the SCT . What you have to remember there is tolerance for the Airy spot position 0.1mm . The danger is touching the secondary mirror very critical for the aligment of the optical system. The HD is based on an aspherical secondary , a the Schmidt Blade with different radius the air space doublet. This solution is to keep a short tube to correct bur the Coma the Chromatisme and spherical aberrations will be inside the AirySpot up to 14mm of the axis . But also to change the the Petzval sum for flatening the focus plan. A very good telescope. The reducer 0.7 requires another focus position of the SCT to let the final sharp image at the correct backfocus of the reducer. This means the primary will have to go fowards ( this increases the focal length) It is wise to analyse the picture of this focal plane given by the SCT .I f you can put the Cmos at this position you should evaluate its quality . Some time C8 owners are complaining about oval stars at the edge of the Cmos camera. In fact the primary mirror can have some tilt for some positions enougt to modify too much the optical path and to create oval stars. .. Blocking the primary helps but this doesnt eliminate the tilt which can be to 60 to 100 microns at the edge of the mirror! In an optical instrument every detail is important. The theory is one parameter. And Celestron has a commercial policy to sale telescope for a price tag. Celestron can't sell a perfect SCT ...

      Especially at that price. I have a Sharpstar 61edph iii triplet which is much cheaper, and it has significantly better colour performance than what was shown here. It seems like there are still some manufacturing issues to work out on this one. I really like the mechanics, so it would be great if they got things in check. Hopefully they'll also provide free service for folks who are running into the issues shown in this video.

    Thanks for the review Cody!👍Here are a few of my opinions: 1. It's nice to see a fast scope with reducer that appears to illuminate a 44mm circle without brutal amounts of vignetting! And, yes, it is a very user-friendly package! 2. It's unfortunate that the reducer introduces a lot of colour error. I have a hunch that it has no extra low dispersion glass in it. 3. IMHO, you were dealing with some tilt in the system, because the parts of the field with distorted stars changed after you added the reducer to the system. 4. FWIW, we need to keep in mind that the ZWO 2600 MC duo has 3.76um pixels, while the Canon R8 has 6.00um pixels. That means the test of the optics with a full frame sensor was much more forgiving than it would be with, say, an IMX455 sensor, e.g. ZWO 6200MM or 6200MC camera. The IMX410 sensor (e.g. ZWO 2400MC) has pixels which are similar in size to the R8, so those who are happy with the resolution & performance in your test with the R8 may want to consider using an IMX410 based camera over an IMX455 based cam. 5. Generally, the saying 'you get what you pay for' does apply to telescope optics, and the fact that the Founder Optics Draco 62 is just a bit more than half the price of the William Optics Pleiades 68 is reinforced by your carefully done, thorough testing. The Pleiades 68 has similar specs to the Draco when the Draco reducer is used, and I do not recall seeing any examples of the f3.8 Pleiades 68 producing colour error like we saw from the Draco at f3.9.

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender 3 дня назад

      Hi Derek, 1) Agreed! I did not take any flats because I wanted viewers to see what kind of vignetting they could expect. Not seeing much was a pleasant surprise. 2) I also agree here. When I inquired about the glass I was told one element of FPL-53 and one element of FPL-55, with the rest being ED glass. I imagine extra low dispersion glass in the reducer would have increased the price above the target (just my speculation). 3. Yep, still not too bad for no adjustment out of the box. I expect with some tinkering you could get good corners with a full frame sensor (as I mention at the end of the full frame sensor analysis). 4. This is a good point. I expected the Draco 62 to be optimized for sensors APS-C and smaller. Even with the R8s large pixels, I was pleasantly surprised that it performed pretty well with a full frame sensor. I do agree though that the smaller pixels in the IMX455 would be a better test, but I’m limited to what I’ve got, unfortunately! As a side note, I think the thing that impressed me the most with the Draco 62 is it’s performance and included accessories at its price. The $900 pre-order price from a few months ago was an absolute bargain, and the $1100 price currently I still think is great for a budget refractor that gives good performance and comes with so many accessories. Thanks for your thoughts!

  • @jdastro

    Very good video presentation. But a word of caution. For tracking purposes this scope's tripod and mount are not good near the equator, The single arm would have to be pointing near the horizon to have it polar aligned, basically level with the ground, and the mount cannot be configured that way. I have a Nexstar8i, three degrees south of the equator, so, no polar alignment for me.

    I don't understand why it's so important to get exactly 133.35 mm back focus. Can't we just focus the scope a few mm or cm forward or backward to make up the difference? I don't know what the focus range is, but typically I am able to get my cameras to focus. However, whether or not they are capturing the entire FOV, etc. is a different matter. I am going to go ahead and order the celestron T-adapter anyway - I just mean theoretically.

    I am looking into getting another mount for my Edge HD 9.25 and was between the CGEM II and the AM5. This has been very helpful!!
